The University of León has a history of local academic programs dating back to 1943, including Veterinary Sciences, Biological Sciences, Education, Mining, Agronomy, Philosophy and Literature, and Law, initially affiliated with the University of Oviedo. It is a dynamic and youthful institution. It offers a wide range of educational opportunities, including 39 Bachelor's degree programs, 5 pathways for obtaining Double Degrees, 31 official Master's degree programs, 5 inter-university programs, 2 international Master's programs, and 17 Doctoral programs, providing a comprehensive selection of official degrees
With the establishment of the University of León in 1979, the development of the university campus began. Located between the San Mamés neighborhood and Villaobispo, the campus hosts faculties, schools, service centers, sports facilities, and a central library. Certain educational and research centers, as well as the Rectorate (El Albeitar building), services, and university residences, remain outside the campus in various parts of the city.
