The Digital Opportunity Traineeships is a European institutional initiative, funded through the Erasmus+ programme, which aims to provide an opportunity for recent graduate and students to gain practical and valuable experience in the area of technology in a company abroad. 

This EU initiative is coordinated by ESN - Erasmus Student Network, and aims to match the needs of companies in need of digitally skilled workforce, with students and recent graduates looking for a first experience in the tech sector. This way, the Digital Opportunity Traineeships tackles a variety of objectives: maintaining Europe's global competitiveness in a fast-changing environment; increasing employability of recent graduates and students; helping companies, from small and medium sized organisations (SMEs) to large corporations to  find workforce with a skills set that suits current digital trends. 

Companies participating in the programme cover a variety of fields and types of emerging technologies. Digital Opportunity Traineeships can be carried out in any of the fields below: 

  • Development of apps, software, scripts, websites.
  • Installation, maintenance and management of information technology (IT) systems and networks.
  • Data analytics. 
  • Cybersecurity. 
  • Cloud. 
  • Quantum computing /Artificial Intelligence
  • Encryption.
  • Blockchain. 
  • Data mining, privacy and visualisation. 
  • Programming languages. 
  • Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
  • Digital marketing. 
  • Specific software apps for work. 
  • Customer Care Management. 

The Digital Opportunity Traineeships are available to students and recent graduates, based in any one of the Erasmus+ Programme Countries. Students located in Erasmus+ Partner Countries can also participate. Trainees receive on average €500/month, depending on the member state through a grant via their university. Participating companies can also top up the grant. 

Applications for the Digital Opportunity Traineeships are made through one's university, which facilitates cross-border mobility and a truly multicultural experience.
