Veilig Online

The internet provides our children with a lot of opportunities. But unfortunately, there are risks too. Some parents lack the skills, knowledge or awareness to mediate effectively their children’s internet use. They need to be supported to enable them to better understand their children's online activities and to better communicate with their children about the risks involved. For several years now, since 2007, the Gezinsbond and Child Focus have been educating parents about the safe use of new media through a program consisting of tools, trainings and an interactive website. Using online interactive modules our speakers go out to parents in varies schools and organizations across Flanders and Brussels. The website www.veiligonline.be focuses on 6 modules: internet & privacy, gaming, social media, cyberbullying, online relations, sexuality and digitoddlers. Each program consists of an interactive module in which testimonials of children, youth, parents and experts take a central role. Through animation videos and infographics parents learn about the media activities of young people. With a quiz, statements and concrete tips, the training is both attractive and dynamic. Since 2018, we offer a new digital training developed specifically for and with the input of socially disadvantaged groups. To organizations working with vulnerable groups this training is offered for free. By doing so, we strive to bridge the digital divide and empower all parents to be part of a digitalized society. For each module we select qualified speakers. The speakers are trained within the Veilig Online project with the help of experts in their respective fields such as gaming, sexuality or Artificial Intelligence. Through regular meetings with the speakers we keep them updated about the renewals within the field and therefore within our modules.
