Good Practices

Data ethics has become a key component of the modern digital era and organisations face the challenge of integrating ethical principles into their data practices. In April 2019, the Danish government set up a Data Ethics Board: a group of people from diverse backgrounds and areas of digital expertise with the idea for them to support and lead an open debate on the use of new digital tools, data, AI, and the challenges and possibilities the future will bring.

To facilitate this transition and make data ethics more tangible, Data Ethics Boards have developed two tools that serve as practical tools to implement and understand data ethical principles. Data ethics has been at the heart of the discussion for organisations, businesses and authorities. However, the challenge lies in translating this topic of discussion into practical action. Many face the complexity of data ethics and need support to make informed decisions.

Enhancing data ethics and data literacy

Ethics at the forefront of working with data

The first tool developed under the guidance of the Danish Data Ethics Board aims to raise awareness of the various ethical; issues one may face when working with data. Suitable for organisations and policymakers, the tool is a guide to understanding the fundamental principles underpinning data ethics. The tool takes learners through the possibilities and opportunities opened up by our increased work with data, but also through the potential challenges and unintended consequences of decisions involving data.

By taking users through concrete examples and scenarios, this tool helps to provide information on how best to integrate ethical considerations into data collection, processing and use. It enables organisations to take more informed decisions that take into account the complex ethical aspects of data practices.

Making informed decisions when working with data

The second tool focuses on bringing important data ethical decisions to light and ensuring that they are taken on an informed basis. It also serves as a framework to assess and evaluate the potential ethical implications of a data practice. It encourages a systematic approach involving different stakeholders and perspectives.
By providing clarity on the potential risks and benefits of different data actions, this tool allows decision-makers to navigate complex ethical dilemmas. It serves as a guide for balancing the need for data use with respect to personal rights, confidentiality and public responsibility.

Why is this a good practice?

Overall, these tools represent a valuable step towards a more comprehensive integration of data ethics into organisations’ daily practices. By providing decision-makers with practical tools, Data Ethics Boards are creating a pathway for organisations to navigate complex data ethical challenges.

By promoting awareness, informed decisions and transparency on data ethical issues, these tools pave the way for a more responsible and ethical use of data. The Data Ethics Board initiative shows that it is not only important to talk about data ethics, but also to make it a practical and integral part of our digital future.

Data ethics toolbox

Many companies want to use data and AI in a trustworthy and ethical manner but often they don’t know how. To support companies, especially SMEs, the Danish government published a Data Ethics Toolbox as guidance for companies to integrate data ethics into their business model. The toolbox contains guidelines on how to include data ethics in their company’s code of practice, best practice case studies and impact assessment tools on the responsible use of algorithms.
