Child Safety in the Digital World - Competency Check

Child safety in the digital world is a critical concern for parents and caregivers. With four tools designed to assess digital parenting competencies, users can evaluate their current skills in this area and identify where they might need improvement.

Tools for Digital Parenting Competence

The tools include a self-assessment CHECK and a knowledge-based QUIZ. The CHECK for digital parenting competence guides users step-by-step through various digital scenarios, asking self-assessment questions to gauge how well they can handle each situation. The self-assessment questions in the CHECK are suitable for children of all ages (0-15 years).

In contrast, the QUIZ format features specific knowledge questions in a multiple-choice format. For the QUIZ, users can select the appropriate age group (0-5 years, 6-9 years, 10-15 years). Both the CHECK and the QUIZ can be repeated as often as needed. These tools are based on the Austrian Model for Digital Skills in the version DigComp 2.2. AT.

Users receive a free short report after completing the CHECK or QUIZ. These reports are linked to additional learning resources and training opportunities.

• The CHECK for Child Safety in the Digital World (0-15 years) provides an initial overview of one's ability to support children aged 0 to 15 in navigating the digital world. The self-assessment questions in the CHECK apply to children of all age groups (0-15 years).
• The QUIZ for Child Safety in the Digital World offers insight into the user's actual competencies in this area. Users should select the QUIZ version (0-5 years, 6-9 years, 10-15 years) that corresponds to the age of their child (or children).

Competency Areas

The digital parenting tools cover the five safety-related competency areas of the Austrian Digital Competence Model across competency levels 1 (basic) to 4 (independent). They also encompass the following "digital parenting competencies":

• assessing and appropriately guiding children through the opportunities and risks of the online world
• providing digital devices that are age-appropriate for children

Methodology

The tools for assessing the digital competencies of parents and caregivers consist of a CHECK with self-assessment questions and three QUIZZES with knowledge-based questions. These resources are structured according to the DigComp 2.2. AT competency model.
