On Tuesday, 11 November 2025, the National Student Welfare Services, in collaboration with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), hosted a future-oriented seminar for guidance teachers and career advisers in Malta's Digital Innovation Hub, DiHubMT. Its objective? Equipping educators with the necessary tools and knowledge to guide learners towards successful careers in ICT and the digital economy.

The seminar offered a look at Malta’s ICT landscape, from university degrees to vocational pathways, while emphasising the vital role of career guidance in shaping the next generation of technology expert professionals.

Why is the ICT Guide Important?

ICT careers are among the fastest-growing throughout Europe, and Malta is no exception. From cybersecurity and software development to AI, data science, and digital entrepreneurship, this sector offers many opportunities in Malta.

As an active member of the EU CodeWeek, MDIA is committed to promoting digital literacy and digital skills in all age groups. But knowledge alone is not enough! Students need informed guidance to navigate these evolving careers.

This is where career advisers come in. Their role is crucial to helping students understand not only what ICT is, but how it connects with their personal strengths, as well as real-world opportunities and future trends. This seminar was designed to reflect that perspective, offering both strategic knowledge and practical exposure.

Education and industry

The day started with a welcome by Ms Lorraine Grech Aquilina (Education Officer, Career Guide), followed by Mr Carmel Cachia (MDIA), who described the range of careers in Malta’s ICT and digital sector.

After a short break, Professor Matthew Montebello (Head of Department of AI, University of Malta) and Mr Conrad Vassallo (Director of ICT Institute MCAST) presented the latest available ICT courses in their institutions, highlighting how students can adapt their education to match industry needs

The seminar concluded with a visit to DiHubMT, led by Marion Bugeja Micallef (Innovation and Networking Ecosystem Officer). Here, the consultants have directly seen the tools and technologies that are shaping the careers of tomorrow: 3D printers, Podcast room, IOT and Design Laboratories, High Performance Computers (HPC), and an area dedicated to entrepreneurship.

Building a digital future

This seminar was more than a training session. It was a strategic investment in Malta’s educational ecosystem. Empowering guidance professionals with up-to-date knowledge and immersive experiences, we ensure that students receive relevant and progressive advice.

As the EU continues to prioritise digital transformation, these initiatives align Malta with broader European goals: inclusion, innovation, and digital empowerment.
