The Latvian National Commission of UNESCO invites teachers to acquire artificial intelligence (AI) competences useful in the educational process in a newly developed open-access online course. The introductory course is designed as a guide for educators, regardless of their prior knowledge in the field of technology, presenting the competences defined by UNESCO related to the rapid uptake of AI in the learning process and in society as a whole.
Course Framework and Competency Dimensions
This course is based on the UNESCO AI competency framework for teachers, which is the first global document defining the knowledge and skills teachers need in the AI age. It is based on the principles of respect for human rights, strengthening human capacity and sustainable development and is divided into five dimensions: human-centric thinking, AI ethics, AI foundations and applications, AI pedagogy and AI for professional development. The competences are acquired in three stages – initial understanding, in-depth application, creation of new approaches – promoting the ability of teachers to become agents of change in education themselves.
Course Content and Availability
The course is available on the UNESCO website. It consists of five short video lectures, each explaining one specific AI competence, and methodological materials to help teachers deepen their understanding and find ideas on how to use these topics in their daily work. The content is designed to be useful to the teacher of any subject and to encourage thinking not only about the possibilities of using AI, but also about critical attitudes, values and the future of society in the age of technology.
Supporting Organizations
The development of the online course is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia and the State Education Development Agency. The Latvian National Commission for UNESCO expresses its gratitude to Lielvārds for the opportunity provided to use the premises for filming the course.
