Augmented reality in sustainable development and the protection and enhancement of natural heritage

The University of the Aegean through the Centre for Education and Lifelong Learning offers a free open online course entitled: Augmented reality in sustainable development and in the protection and enhancement of natural heritage.

The aim of this program is the introduction of participants in the use of modern technological equipment and augmented reality software as well as in the production of material that can be exploited in the context of sustainable development and protection of natural heritage.

The programme is aimed at:

  • educational, educational and environmental bodies
  • developers of augmented reality content (in particular on themes of sustainable development and the protection and enhancement of natural heritage).
  • students and/or undergraduates PhDs and researchers in corresponding scientific fields.

Course modules

The course is structured in 4 weeks of attendance and the total completion time is 40 hours in total. The following sections are detailed:

Week 1: Technology of Augmented Reality

Week 2: Augmented reality and mobile devices in the context of sustainable development today

Week 3: The Environment through the use of software for the promotion of natural heritage

Week 4: The case of the Rhodes Butterflies OEM

Upon completion of the course each participant will be able to:

  • recognise modern developments in augmented reality.
  • understand the importance of utilising modern technology hardware and software, targeted at exploiting the basic goals of sustainable development.
  • operate as a user of augmented reality hardware and software.
  • deepen knowledge and skills in augmented reality and actively contribute to the development of new material for sustainable development and enhancement of natural heritage.

The course is implemented with the principles of asynchronous distance learning through the individual study of digital educational material (self-paced learning).
