The BIRGIT Project: learning materials on BIM integrated with geographical Information

Both the public and private sectors in the construction and geospatial industries are increasingly seeking innovative approaches to urban planning, asset design, and management. Digitization is a key driver in reducing costs, environmental impact, and carbon footprints.
A fundamental step in this transformation is integrating Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). By bridging construction and geospatial information management, this integration enhances construction processes and improves the management of assets such as buildings, roads, and public infrastructure.
Despite its growing importance, there is a lack of skilled personnel—particularly in Vocational Education and Training (VET)—equipped to address the competencies needed for BIM-GIS integration. This project aims to bridge the skills gap by improving the quality of VET offerings through the development of new, practical courses.
Training overview
The training materials are freely available on the project website for professionals, students, and educators. These resources can be used for self-learning or as support for teaching. Designed for flexibility, the lectures can be followed at your own pace, without requiring a tutor. Tested in real-world training contexts by project partners, the materials are available to download in English with most content also translated into Croatian, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish.
The learning offer consists of three modules:
- Introduction to BIM: Covers BIM fundamentals, benefits, challenges, data management, workflow optimization, and its applications in construction and facility management.
- 3D GIS, City Models, and Digital Twins: Focuses on creating and managing 3D city models and digital urban twins, targeting learners with a GIS background.
- BIM-GIS Integration: Explains the benefits and challenges of integrating BIM and GIS, covering workflows, data quality and conversion, with practical use cases.
About the BIRGIT project
BIRGIT offers learning materials tailored for professionals, students, and educators looking for updated teaching resources related to the integration of BIM and GIS technologies. The offer consists of three comprehensive modules: Introduction to BIM, 3D GIS City Models and Digital Twins, and BIM-GIS Integration, providing both theoretical foundations and practical applications. These resources are freely accessible from the project website as downloadable slide-based presentations, accompanied by notes and assignments.
