The offer of technology will soon bring older people closer to the digital world and its opportunities. It includes tablet and smartphone courses for the elderly with little or no prior knowledge. Katholisches Bildungswerk is a legally recognised, public institution of general adult education in Austria. They offer these courses which take place throughout Styria and are run by young, media-competent adults.
In addition to the possibility to take part in a course, it also offers assistance in organising a course in its own right. Documents for all courses are available as downloads. The initiative will also provide training for technical coaches.
Overview of the offer
Technical hotline, free tablet snupper courses and tablet courses for newcomers
Key trainers answer questions about the use of tablets, smartphones and PCs or laptops by telephone.The hotline is available free of charge.Moreover, Two free snupper hours provide basic knowledge of how to use a tablet. In addition to basic orientation and basic concepts, participants also learn how to take, manage and send photos, and everything around apps and much more. You can bring your own tablets, but there are also on-site devices available.
This course consists of three parts of two hours each and is offered throughout Styria with five participants or more. The course topics include the start on the tablet, key terms, and how to deal with images and the mailbox and GMX mail. Interested parties also learn about apps on how to use the tablet by instant Messenger and how to move safely on the internet. You can bring your own tablets, but there are also on-site devices available.
The focus of this course is the deepening of tablet skills. This course is also made up of three times two hours and is offered throughout Styria with five participants or more. The topics covered by the course range from ‘on-line’ to dealing with calendars, video telephony and WhatsApp and many more. Advanced tablet courses and smartphone courses for newcomers and advanced people
The use of the smartphone is shown in this three-part course. In two hours each, participants learn how to start with the smartphone and learn about the main concepts and different operating systems. After the course, they are able to call the smartphone, write text messages, use the camera and take notes using the mobile phone. It also provides all information about apps and internet security for safe and reliable internet use. The course can be completed with a dedicated smartphone of any brand. The course may be followed by a three-part initial course.
In addition to courses, it also offers videos with information material on tablets, smartphones and related applications. The videos were produced on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection by the Catholic Education Agency Styria and Conventa. The content includes basic knowledge of digital technologies and their safe and responsible use.
What makes technology soon a good practice?
The initiative will soon be a good practice model, offering targeted courses and information materials for seniors on tablet and smartphones. These offers are broad, ranging from initial courses to advanced courses. Support through a hotline and information materials complements the educational offer and facilitates access to digital education for older people. This contributes to promoting digital literacy and inclusion among older people.
