European Regions Week: Bridging the digital divide by supporting digital infrastructure for smart and sustainable regions

Event location
Albert Borschette Congress Center, AB-4B, 1040 Brussels, Belgium

On 8 October 2024, the European Commission services (DG AGRI, DG REGIO, DG CONNECT) in close collaboration with the European Broadband Competence Network Support Facility and the CoR Broadband Platform will host a workshop focused on ‘smart and sustainable growth for regions’.

Smart and sustainable growth of regions

Many regions in Europe, especially rural and less dynamic ones, face challenges like economic stagnation, demographic changes, and limited access to essential services such as healthcare and education. These issues are often worsened by a lack of digital infrastructure, which restricts opportunities, particularly for women and people with disabilities. Despite efforts through the EU Cohesion Policy, large gaps remain between more connected urban areas and smaller towns or villages.

About the workshop

This workshop will focus on the growing digital divide in Europe and its impact on social and economic cohesion. Under the theme of "Smart and Sustainable Growth for Regions," it will explore how improving digital infrastructure can help address regional disparities and promote more inclusive growth. The workshop will examine how EU Cohesion Policy can further support investment in digital infrastructure to create more resilient, sustainable regions. It will also highlight successful regional practices, that are leading the way in overcoming the digital divide.
