Blockchain Applications for Food Quality Assurance and Certification (TRUST-FOOD)

The course "Blockchain Applications for Food Quality Assurance and Certification" is an intermediate-level course developed within the scope of the TRUST-FOOD project, funded under the DIGITAL Europe Programme of the European Union. The course is designed for owners of small and medium-sized organisations (SMEs), managers and employees in the Food Quality Assurance and Certification sector (from here on, abbreviated as as FSC).
Behind the TRUST-FOOD project is an ambition to up- and re-skill those working for SMEs in the agriculture and food sector and unveil the benefits blockchain adoption entails. To do this, the project is developing a range of courses, from beginner to advanced level, with the aim to leave nobody interested in the subject behind.
Why this course?
This course dives straight into the knowledge and practical skills one needs to understand, implement, and leverage blockchain technology in FSC (e.g. enhancing food quality assurance and addressing certification processes). In fact, the FSC is a complex network that brings together a range of interconnected activities, processes and entities that are a part of food products' production, processing, distribution and consumption. This network encompasses all stages (and intermediaries) that enable food to travel from the place where it was originally produced to our very fingertips.
The FSC is a critical component of the food industry: its role of ensuring food products reach consumers safely, efficiently, whilst maintaining good quality is indispensable. At the same time, blockchain technology is increasingly being used in the field to improve transparency, traceability and trust. Through this course, learners will get a sound understanding of the ways blockchain technology is applied to facilitate food quality assurance and certification.
More specifically, the first lesson provides familiarisation with the notions of food quality assurance and food quality certification under the light of the FSC. With the second lesson, attendees will gain familiarity with the utilisation of blockchain technology in ensuring food quality and certification, particularly within the framework of the FSC by a step-by-step process to identify stakeholders in FSC.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Get a grasp of the underlying processes and potential challenges for food quality assurance and certification and understand the possibilities blockchain technologies bring to the sector.
- Understand how blockchain adoption can be put to use in the context of FSC and explore a wide range of specific case studies of blockchain application in the sector.
- Improve their understanding of how to design and adapt blockchain applications for FSC and ensure its proper application in their respective organisations.
