Trustworthy and democratic AI – Fundamentals (AI4GOV MOOC)

'Trustworthy and democratic AI - Fundamentals' is a MOOC developed in the context of the EU-funded AI4GOV project - 'Trusted AI for Transparent Public Governance fostering Democratic Values'.
The AI4GOV project aims to explore the potential of technologies like AI and big data to advance society and foster understanding of the growing need for responsible AI development.
Why this MOOC?
The world of AI is surely an exciting one, but also one where algorithms now seem much more blended within the very fabrics of our lives, shaping the now, and the future in an unprecedented way. Indeed, AI does seem to be everywhere around us: from the virtual assistants on our phones, who prompted via a voice command can now do tons of things more compared to before; to tailored recommendations for movies and similar songs on major streaming platforms. And let's not even mention the potential the improved technology has to revolutionise healthcare or even guide scientists' breakthroughs. But as AI continues to evolve, there is even more reason to ensure it is explainable, without bias, and transparent.
Course details
The AI4GOV MOOC explores the fundamentals of building trustworthy and democratic AI. Designed for learners with no previous knowledge of the subject, the course starts by giving an overview of the basics of AI, before moving on to the ethical considerations that underpin AI development and deployment. The aim of the MOOC is to empower learners with the knowledge they need to navigate an increasingly AI-driven and digital world with ease and confidence.
Training materials include: text, video lectures, presentation slides, comic books, quizzes. The course is split into 4 main modules, and an additional section containing training and learning resources and materials.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will:
- Get a solid grasp of the main concepts underpinning AI, machine learning and deep learning.
- Learn how to recognise the transformative potential, but also the ethical implications of AI across industries and sectors.
- Gain knowledge on the main types and sources of bias that manifest in AI systems.
- Understand the real-world consequences of biased AI.
- Improve competence related to data collection and pre-processing and learn how they can introduce bias into AI models.
- Learn how to implement best practices for collecting, cleaning and preparing data in such a way so the risk for bias is reduced.
- Get to know the main regulatory and legal frameworks governing AI in Europe (GDPR, AI Act).
