Basic Encryption and Authentication Methods
This beginner-level course introduces fundamental encryption and authentication methods essential for protecting digital information. Designed for learners starting their cybersecurity journey, the course provides a clear overview of cryptographic principles and practical security mechanisms used in modern digital systems. The course is part of the CyberSuite project - funded under the DIGITAL Europe Programme of the European Union - which aims to bridge market gaps by establishing an easily accessible marketplace for cybersecurity services tailored to SMEs, fostering simplicity and accessibility in high-level security, privacy, and trust.
About this course
Participants explore symmetric and asymmetric encryption techniques, hash functions, and digital signatures, gaining an understanding of how data confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity are ensured. The course also examines authentication mechanisms, including password-based systems, two-factor authentication (2FA), and multi-factor authentication (MFA), highlighting their role in strengthening access control.
Learning outcomes
Through structured modules and practical exercises, learners develop foundational knowledge of cryptographic workflows and authentication strategies used in real-world applications.
By the end of the course, participants will understand core encryption concepts, distinguish between different cryptographic approaches, apply basic authentication mechanisms, and recognize how encryption and authentication contribute to overall cybersecurity resilience.
