Safer Internet Day: together for a better internet

Safer Internet Day (SID) is a global event celebrated with the aim to create a safer internet for all users – especially young people. This year, it falls on Tuesday, 11 February– however, the activities for SID will take place over the entire month.
The theme for this year is ‘Together for a better internet,’ which continues to reflect the collective commitment to creating a safe, inclusive digital space.
As part of the wider Better Internet for Kids (BIK) platform, a dedicated Safer Internet Day section provides a global platform where countries and international organisations can showcase events and actions conducted locally, nationally and internationally for Safer Internet Day.
Why Safer Internet Day is important
Safer Internet Day is celebrated in over 180 countries and territories. The event was originally launched by the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and was later embraced by the Insafe network in 2005. Over the years, the event has united millions of people worldwide to ensure the internet remains a place of opportunity where children and young people can create, share, and engage positively.
For the 2025 edition of Safer Internet Day, a new mascot – Ally– was created in collaboration with young people, to ensure the campaign resonates more with them. With activities already ramping up around the world, it’s possible to have seen Ally float around already.
This year, SID will again highlight the European strategy for a better internet for children, known as BIK+ (Better Internet for Kids). Adopted in May 2022, the strategy focuses on the vision that all children in Europe can enjoy age-appropriate digital services, where they are protected, empowered, and respected online. The aim is to empower young people with the tools and knowledge they need to navigate the online world safely and responsibly, ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.
Throughout this day and the entire month, numerous resources and materials are being released, including a comprehensive toolkit on manipulative marketing in online games, developed as part of the AdWiseOnline campaign. These materials feature learning modules for families and educators, webinars, and practical guides. Additionally, they highlight the active participation of young people in resource development, as well as the involvement of influencers in raising awareness about in-game marketing issues.
How DSJP aligns with SID
Safer Internet Day aligns with the goals of the Digital Skills and Jobs Platform, as we have seen and acknowledged the need for Europeans to advance their digital skills and knowledge, further their careers and add value to their organisations. However, we are also aware of the dangers and risks of the online environment. A safer internet will further empower all people -young and old - to keep enhancing and learning digital skills, staying ahead of the game and not being left behind.
Safer Internet Day background
SID is organised within the framework of the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) initiative by the Insafe network (coordinated by European Schoolnet) and INHOPE (the International Association of Internet Hotlines), on behalf of the European Commission.

Let’s make February a month of action for a safer internet for everyone!
Safer Internet Day would not be possible without the support of the European Commission, which has been providing financial and logistical support for the campaign since the very first edition as part of a range of wider initiatives, currently delivered under the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) activity line. As such, the EC also co-funds the joint Insafe-INHOPE network of Safer Internet Centres in Europe.
